The 177.fdd disk is in the old Virtual98 format, but the header is wrong. The beginning of the file should be "VFD1.00" (56 46 44 31 2E 30 30), not "VFD1.01" (56 46 44 31 2E 30 31). Unless there was some obscure, unofficial update of the Virtual98 floppy dumping tool mkfdd. The last official update of mkfdd produces "VFD1.00" files. The only clue is in the file comment: "Converted by VFIC(No!Anex86 Version)". I don't understand what that means.

I don't have much information on the Virtual98 fdd format, but the first 50,171 bytes (up to 0xC3FB) is all header/track information. The actual disk data starts at 0xC3FC. The other thing is that it doesn't pad the end of the file, so you end up with "short" files. I've seen 1.2MB floppy images that shrink down to less than 50KB in fdd format.

Anyway, here's a fixed fdd, and a conversion to d88.

The converted d88 definitely works in Neko Project, should work in most other emulators.

If you back-convert your .d88, you get that, but thankfully the correct version "VFD1.00". Strange though.

Are you sure? I removed the .fdd file comment in the conversion to d88, so if you back-convert the d88, the file comment shouldn't just magically reappear. I think you're referring to the fixed fdd I uploaded. For that file, I corrected the header to "VFD1.00", but left the original file comment.

The main things to remember in case we encounter this problem again:
1) If we change the header to "VFD1.00", VFIC will correctly recognize the fdd format and convert, or
2) We can manually convert fdd files by deleting the first 50,171 bytes, and manually padding the end of the file.

Looks like I was wrong again - dumped the wrong file - sorry. I really must be getting senile.

Yes. Your knowing about that version number is amazingly clever though.

You can't see the files because it's not DOS formatted. The disks are fine.
