I'm a little surprised there is not a PC-Engine forum. It's kind of a console but has PC in the name after all.

I'm trying to basically emulate Jaseiken Necromancer (PC-Engine game) on my computer. I think I already have a PC-Engine emulator installed somewhere. It's a pretty popular game in its own obscure way, even available on the PSN and Wii Virtual Console (I'm assuming)

Maybe I just need a link to a popular website, I'm not sure. But figured this is the place to ask.

Thanks

You should not be. PC-Engine is a console, and Tokugawa Forums are about retro japanese computing. That's why there's not a single post about PCE.. excepting maybe the Floppy Tavern.

Actually, I don't get the main point of your question.

Is it about how to emulate the game or why the tokugawa doesnt have a pce section? Hm..

Anyway, there are a lot of pce dedicated sites.

As for the emu part, you need the rom and an emulator (example Ootake).

It's kind of 100 % a console : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TurboGrafx-16

By the way, that Wikipedia article is a huge pile of smelly smoking mess.
The TurboGrafx is a specific model of PC Engine -- not the other way around.

@Largo

Not the best place to hang around in the Interweb, but you'll probably find support at pcenginefx.com -- beware, it's a very US-centric forum with frequent clashes of ego.

I did not really give it much thought. But assumed there was some lineage between the PC- platforms.

The PC88/98 games I've played all seem very console-ish and I reckon the means of playing them (control pads etc) were console like as well.

When I last read thru these forums I don't think I ever noticed the absence of the PC-Engine. I will I guess have to seek out an image bin somewhere.

Personally I think the PC-Engine should be represented here because of the shared esthetic and assuming it was where the game makers accustomed to developing for the PC-X platforms maybe migrated to during that time. But then it's not my call or something I know much about.

So was the the PC-Engine more tightly licensed? Didn't allow pornographic or DIY titles? Where is the real distinction (out of curiosity) ?

The PC Engine (there's no hyphen) was a video game console. There's really not much room for debate.

That's quite common. Japanese computer games have always had simple controls compared to Western computer games, and game pads were often used.

Yes, NEC had licensing restrictions, and although they were lenient than Nintendo, erotic content was strictly forbidden. Doujin games were not possible, because you needed to purchase a development kit and license from NEC, and have your game put onto a HuCard.

The real distinction? There are many:
    * The PC Engine was about 1/10th the cost of a typical PC-8801 or PC-9801
    * Much lower resolution: 256x239 for PC Engine, compared to 640x200 or 640x400 for the computers
    * No software other than games
    * No keyboard, no floppy disk drives
    * No operating system

Not correct. While you won't find licensed pornographic content, many games had fan service and erotic material. Of course they were censored in one way or another (usually by pieces of clothes), but adult content was not "strictly" forbidden. Far from it.

The PCE is capable of 256x224, 336x224 and 512x224. Many RPGs and digicomics were in 336x224, which was a decent resolution for console ports.
