I figured I’d make a miscellaneous upload category. Some of these old retro Japanese computer games got remade on the PC.

Briganty: The Roots of Darkness

The graphically superior but oh so musically inferior Windows port of the PC-98 classic. Yes, they converted the original music to MIDI. But, this archive also contains the PC-98 version. So there.

In any case, this is a great platformer/beat-em-up with awesome music (for one of the versions). No Japanese knowledge required.

Hydlide: Download Edition

This magnificently done remake was translated into English by Derrick Sobodash of CinnamonPirate. Now you may have heard ill tidings surrounding this game but almost all of these problems have been addressed in this remake. Except the music. It uses music from the very first Hydlide; the PC-88 version of 1984. And this music will drive you mad. So, Derrick was also kind enough to provide you with a music switcher. I suggest switching to “Out of Freedom” myself but you can also use any wav file of your choice. Just drop it into the music folder.

Some truly awesome aspects of this game:
-switch remake/pc-88 mode with the mere touch of a button
-automatic joystick configuration
-optional killjoy mode if you press a certain key… (good for a replay but makes the game way too ridiculously easy)

Due to a coming change in Ninja’s integration, the patch has already been applied.

You can download the Japanese game from Vector.

---

I uploaded Thunder (Lightning) Warrior Raidy about a week ago but seeing how it’s getting an English localization in a few months, there’s not much of a point in linking it. I plan to upload the Wordsworth remake in a week or two. If anyone’s got the PC-98 version, I could add it to archive.

Great idea! If you have any obscure, old and unknown japanese (or chinese or koreanese or whateverese) rpgs - please post them here, I'm always looking for some new titles to be added to my database :) But - if possible - could you use rapidshare? Megaupload is in Poland almost non-usable - it's free only during darkest hours of the night...

You can read this on how to bypass megaupload's country limitation. If you use Firefox, just get this extension.

Thanks for Words Worth and Crystal Rinal!

Words Worth

Glitter of light cast shadow… the more the light glows, the more the shadow deepens.

The immensely remade Words Worth PC edition. The archive wouldn’t let me add the first PC-98 version but I’ll put it together with some games I’ll upload later in the PC-98 uploads section.

This game is very good. From the English opening, to the jazzy soundtrack, to the incredibly simplistic gameplay mechanics, this game is sure to bring out the dungeon crawler in you.

Compared to the original, there are no more random encounters and you just find the creatures and slash them with the enter key. Or they find you.

Ah!! Caught me by surprise will you? Well, I’ll show you!

Image

Die! Die! Die!

The first one is actually quite a bit tougher and features an old warrior in place of the monster on the throne in the very first part of conversation in the game. They’re still very similar though and given the disk switching you’ll have to go through for the PC-98 game, it’s just not worth it (hah, I made a funny).

For more screenshots, go here. If nothing else, the music in this new version is the reason you should play it if you solely want to play one of them.

(Yes, I tried creating an HDI. It seems all the disks have copy-protection since you can’t even view their contents)

Nice uploads. Thank You!

Words Worth can be installed to a HD image. The installer is on Disk C.
Like most PC98 games produced by Elf the install disk is the only one with a proper FAT format so that's the only one that can be read under MS-DOS.

Thanks for the help! Could've sworn I checked that disk. Alright, it might be another week for those PC-98 uploads, but they'll be there.

Falcom’s 1st person scenic dungeon crawler. Unlike typical dungeon crawlers most of this game takes place outdoors. This is a remake of the PC-98 Dinosaur game replete with fantastic graphics and a superb soundtrack. You can obtain more information from here.

Wow, looks excellent. How playable is it w/o knowledge of Japanese?

Very nice, Mil.

Words Worth and Dinosaur looks good. I'll try them out later tonight.

Wasn't there suppose to be a english translation to Words Worth remake? I could have sworn there was one.

Pretty playable but you will run into issues with understanding weapon, spell, and item names. I think the Search spell is in English among a few others. This is very helpful as the Search spell is essentially an automap spell.

I've been able to trounce all monsters so far without getting new equipment and the random encounters occur at a fair pace so there shouldn't be much trouble starting out.

Words Worth is the game to go for if you want more obvious weapon, spell, and item names, no random encounters, and a default automap without having to cast a spell.

Lightning Warrior Raidy is a dungeon crawler that's very easy to play without knowing Japanese but it's soon coming out in English anyways.

None that I ever heard of. Words Worth's five-part hentai anime got a new US license under Kitty Media which re-released the series in 2007. The PC RPG itself was never translated into English and I highly doubt it ever will be.

Thanks mil, I see my midas touch on this forum paid off.
Yes, we have to live with japanese games. you can hook it with agth like anex86 which is not accurate when you use translators app or online translators.

Very good thread ! If I remember well, Dinosaur was sold with pre-printed maps for you to draw your own maps. Oldschool touch.

Excuse me gentlemen, but can anybody upload Briganty once more, please? I would like to compare it to PC-98 version which I'm now playing.

Edit: Nevermind, I've got it.

Does anybody have any of these to re-up? I'd especially like that Briganty, but a non-crappy version of Hydlide is certainly worth a look.

Here's some Dinosaur Resurrection
