Hello Tokugawa community.
Our hacker Kingshriek recommended your forums that you'd be probably interested to know that we are in the process of translating one of the best games ever developed into PC98 system, called "この世の果てで恋を唄う少女YU-NO" ( "Kono Yo no Hate de Koi wo Utau Shoujo YU-NO" or "YU-NO, the girl who chants love at the end of this world").

For those who are unfamiliar with it, that's the VNDB article for it:

In a nutshell it's an excellent japanese adventure game / eroge involving time travel, multiple dimensions, fantasy, drama, family themes, suspense, puzzles, crimes, intrigues and various other things. Additionally even though it was released 13 years ago, even today it is still the third highest placed on the japanese eroge database.

We are translating the Windows port though, which is basically the PC98 version ported into Windows, 4 years later after the PC98 release. It is about ~99,9% the same as the PC98 game. The remaining ~0,01% are some really minor censor-modifications which we are planning to de-censor using PC98 scripts and images (can't really elaborate what exactly without involving massive spoilers).
We are also in the process of developing a voicepatch for it using the voices of the Saturn Release.

The reason I'm here besides telling these (hopefully) good news is that we'd welcome everyone with open arms who's confident enough in his translating abilities, and feels like contributing to the cause. We have a translation check on, so occasional minor faults and weird sentences are going to be corrected in the end.

Welcome aboard!

I understand the choice behind the Win version, but that means we'll loose the wonderful FM soundtrack. A shame.

The Wav tracks were badly mixed, it would be nice to re-record them. (Hoot should do the job, since its YM2608 emu is spot on.) Although I'm not sure if you want to just release a patch, or a complete ISO. In any case, please avoid using the god-awful Saturn soundtrack.

Great news!

If the music is just uncompressed .wavs, it should be no biggie to just convert the PC-98 music over, right?

The music tracks are WAV files packed in a custom ARC archive. Kingshriek has developed a very useful tool called yuno_arctools which allows to easily unpack/repack those archives.

I gave it a try, and the problem with the Windows soundtrack is that apparently it's hardcoded in 16 bits 22 KHz mono. Any other setting will produce heavy noise. The interpreter doesn't support Microsoft ADPCM either. According to Kingshriek's notes, Vorbis support is considered on his to-do list. That would really be great.

PS: interesting to know, the resource files seem to be case-sensitive. The game complained it couldn't find YUNO_01.WAV because I had renamed it YUNO_01.wav during my tests.

For the record, the Windows soundtrack is a hodge-podge of music tracks coming from different sources. Most of them are YM2608 cues recorded in mono, but some of them are simpler YM2203 tunes (which are natively in mono) and a couple of important tracks even come from the Saturn version (which is musically unbearable).

It is not difficult to hack the game to use another hard-coded wav file format. I have it playing music in 44.1 kHZ stereo PCM at the moment, using (emulated) recordings from the PC-9801-86 board. Probably would be worth trying MS-ADPCM for voices/sound-effects.

WAVEFORMATEX (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms791274.aspx) structures are set up at virtual addresses 0x0041AEB2, 0x0041AF0B, and 0x0041AFC2 in the executable image. I don't know what the first structure sets up, but the second and third are for the music and sound-effect DirectSound buffers respectively.

Thank you for the warm welcome, and positive reactions.

In case anyone would like to play the prologue in english, then now it's possible. Today we released the patch of the prologue, along with its voices (it provides about few hours of gameplay).

Btw, it's a theory of Danjuro that Donnie Darko was obviously based on Yu-no... I tend to agree!

That's the amount which has been translated, just to clarify things. In contrast, the editing percentage is much lower. Just click on the link Ben provided to find out more.

Actually due to the messed up scriptstructure the game has, and due to the gigantic shared text amount resulting from it, I'd estimate the raw translation closer to about 60% ish or so.
And yeah, sadly editing effort has been halted since march. We are going to do something about it in the near future. Thank you for your support.

Rejoice, for every route involving a certain character has been finished! All that remains is the gigantic epilogue and some miscellaneous items.
