Thank you so much for spotting this. Yamashita's books are always interesting.

I also just noticed this collection of Mycom BASIC inserts:

Ah, you're right!
But most of this stuff originally comes from Winny/Share/PD anyway. It's nice to see them up on Archive.org, it means they'll be available for a long time (hopefully).

Preservation is the main goal, so seeing those CDs on archive.org is a very good thing.
Sadly, archive.org it's a resource that it's often overlooked, there is a lot of great stuff hidden in it's folds.

Eek, ya caught me! :O

Glad to see the uploads have been appreciated, I grabbed more stuff from that thread that hasn't gone up yet too.

Here are some other items I've put up that may be of interest:

http://archive.org/details/mycom-basic-magazine-1988-04
http://archive.org/details/msx-fan-magazine-1992-12
http://archive.org/details/inside-x68000

So basically the story is Jason Scott (of textfiles.com) was hired by the Archive recently and has been working to increase their holdings of computer-history-related materials, particularly magazines and shareware/demo CD-ROMs. He has a big collection of physical materials to digitize, but the initial work has been trying to consolidate all of the various stuff that various communities have put online in scattershot fashion already. I've been helping him out a bit with some of the grunt work of locating and uploading materials, and I've been particularly keen to try and hunt down stuff for Japanese systems since it seems to be a lot harder to find and, as you guys know, the software libraries and "scene" were totally different. I also read Japanese fairly well which comes in handy :)

I <3 archive.org. Keep up the good work :)

Are there any restrictions on uploaded materials? What about copyright issues?

I can't speak on behalf of archive.org since I'm not an employee or anything but for third-party uploads it basically works like Youtube. They will take down things that are blatantly infringing (e.g. new anime episodes or what have you) but otherwise it's down to whether or not they get a complaint from a copyright holder and for out-of-print computer magazines that's pretty unlikely. That said the focus is definitely on things like shareware/freeware where there is no question. One thing I would like to try and get ahold of is older doujin software where the authors are OK with redistribution, since there is already a good amount of Western shareware up.

From what I can make out ( might be wrong as usual LOL ) there is a fair crapload of Japanese Windows freeware/shareware games on the Ring Project, which would be worth mirroring/copying if the Archive has not done so already:

Thanks, somehow I had never heard of this! What's more, it's accessible by FTP so it's easy to grab it all (which I am now doing...slowly). There are some other interesting folders on there which I will be taking a look at as well. The freem games seem to be all 2000s-era though so I have to wonder what's happened to the older material.

In the meantime, have some Japanese magazines to play with:

Note that the PDFs are auto-generated from the .cbz files and not the best quality, but as always on archive.org if you click the "All files: HTTP" link you can grab the original files (or use Read Online).
