I guarantee you will not find it, but let me ask just in case.

Some pretty big named emulation people are hunting for this game since it was revealed in an interview that the Treasure game Bangai-O was originally going to be a remake of said game.

The game IS dumped, but apparently hoarded by the Japanese 'sk33n3rs'.

Here's the interview with the creator of the game where he confirms such claims, screenshots and box art of the game.

Anyone care to solve the mystery of the missing X1 Tape?

Pass : FMV

Seems to require X1 mode to display properly (as the game is low res), but I am no X1 emulation buff.

I read that article at Sega.jp, and I think your friend might be mistaken.
There is a "ー" in the name mentioned in Japanese, and it might have been the multiple platform shooter Hover Attack, quite famous for his missile trails. It features muti-directionnal albeit frontal only firing options, and stupid jumps.

Pass is FMV

Included are the PC88 floppy version (.d88 file), which features awkward keypad +zxc keys for fire, and the X1 version which is a bit of a pain to launch (Insert the .2D basic floppy, boot from it, insert the .tap game tape, type "run"Hover Attack.Bas" - case sensitive - and wait a bunch of time), so I included a quick and dirty xst saved state for xmillenium. The game requires a joystick and use the numerical keypad's 1, 4 and 7 keys for firing.

Hmmm... interesting.
I'll check it out.

And... X Millenium has save states?
Where? How?
I don't see it on the menu.

I don't see that in my menu.
I have X-Millennium T Tune STC Mod.

That's the only X1 emu I could find after many many hours of searching on sites with dead links :(

Danjuro, I tried the game. God, now THIS is more Bangai-o than the other game.

I wonder now who's right on all of this?

Hover Attack looks a bit... unofficial though.
Did this get a commercial release?

copy & paste the url in the browser or it'll give a 403 error: forbidden

download the first one

STC mod doesn't have save state support

It is a game that was commercially published by Compac in 1985 for the PC-88, FM7 and X1 platforms (at least). See bottom for erratum ;)

The unprofessional look was quite common back in those days, as a lot of games were published earlier in one form or another in magasines, eventually attracting some publisher's attention (Compac's semi-famous The Cockpit is one such instance). Basically, like in the West, the games were mainly works of individuals. Prior to the Thexder revolution (1986), graphics and sounds weren't quite getting much attention I think, but that doesn't mean the games didn't play great before - although Hover Attack doesn't play that great ;)

Ah, ranting, ranting... Somebody stop me.

Edit : just looked a bit, and it appears the game was originally published for X1 in the I/O magazine, then published for PC88 by Compac.

Wushu: excellent, thanks a bunch :)

Danjuro: I see.
I guess the only way to really know now what game is the "original" Bangai-o is to see exactly what game was that Yaiman guy talking about.

PS: You should really post your X1 disc/tapes collections.
They are very hard to find and it wouldn't hurt for more people to have them :)

Ok so the X1 version was never officially released, but the PC88 was?
Gotcha.

This whole magazines Vs commercial releases issue is really a nightmare when one is trying to deal with complete platform listings, especially with magazines being all owned by publishers ;) To each his own judgement on the matter I guess (The stance of each individuals is usually told on referencing sites for the matter).

About an X1 pack release, I just grabbed what I came accross around the information super highways, like most of us around here : I didn't test many games and I am, personally, reluctant to upload around any half-assed pack of untested games - most of them could be non-working or badly cracked dumps from what I know (a few of them sure look like non-working stuff), and having such things floating around isn't the best idea. Some ambitious and pretentious projects did enough wrong to The Old School Computers Emulation Community ;)
That and we don't want to step up on Ben's next big project, do we *wink wink*
In the mean time, if you need anything, just feel free to ask and anybody browsing the forum might have it ;)

I didn't know Ben had a project.
Does it involve correctly cataloguing (and possible offering for download) every old computer game?

I understand what you mean about not trying to spread more bad images, but it's better than having the small TOSEC release :P

I wouldn't mind a PM of your X1 archive ;)
