Wow, I can't believe the coincidence

I was searching the web for this and other Riverhill Soft Windows releases since a few days. I found that many interesting titles have been dumped by the redump project (including the Macintosh version of this game). But I don't have any access to those.

So, many thanks for providing this Peter.

Btw. can you confirm that this needs Windows 95 as minimum? From what I've read, there is possibly a Win 3.1 edition.

Great, thanks a lot Peter! :)

I wonder if this version has the English dub like the 3DO one...

I'm also curious to know about the Windows port. To my knowledge, the only bilingual version is the NEC LaserActive one. I don't see any English option on the 3DO nor the PC-FX versions.

You're right, I confused the 3DO version with the Laseractive one.

Haha I bought this game from Yahoo auctions japan last year and played through it (I was in a JB Harold phase and trying to play all the games)

The Windows version of Blue Chicago Blues is the only complete version of the games, heres an overview:

- Despite being a Japanese developed game, Riverhill assembled an American team for producing the video, with all American actors, director and production staff. The script was localized into english and the whole production was carried out while a few of the Japanese people from Riverhill supervised. Obviously the game was originally shot with all the characters speaking english.

- The Windows and Laseractive versions of the games are the ONLY ones that retain the original English voices (along with Japanese subtitles), all other versions (Playstation, saturn, 3do etc) have Japanese dubbing. Its amazing Riverhill went to the effort of creating a proper english script acted out by decent actors but then replacing it with Japanese dubbing for all the mainstream console versions.

- The Windows and Laseractive versions retaining the english voices and having Japanese subtitles is probably because consumers on those systems would have mainly been adults in Japan, and the adults would have appreciated the authenticity of the original English voices given the theme of the game.

- Another MAJOR DIFFERENCE is the fact that the Windows version is the only one with all the original footage, and footage for ALL of the conversations. All the other versions, because of space restrictions, only have video footage for main scenes, and then still images with voice during most of the conversations.

So yeah, the Windows version is the definitive version of the game. Original English voices as well as all the original video footage during all the conversations.

I think the iOS version retains the English dub as well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6aJPymSUPeU

I finally gave the Win95 version a try but, to my dismay, couldn't make it work on Win7-64. Probably because the exe is 16-bit. Maybe I'd have better luck with the Win 3.1 build under DOSBox.

Nevertheless, I went through the whole documentation (PDF manuals) and couldn't find any single reference to an English version. Is the Win95 natively dubbed in English by default? The option screen doesn't seem to have any bilingual feature (contrary to Murder Club on PCE).

Yes because all the actors are American the game is in English with Japanese subtitles.

To make it work in win7 64bit:

- Put the main BCB folder in the C: directory

- From the disks copy the BCB1, BCB2, BCB3, BCB4 and BCB5 folders into the C: directory as well. These DONT go into the original BCB folder, all 6 folders must just be in C:

- From the BCB->Program folder you can then run the game with BCB.exe and the game will auto detect all the video files in the C: folders

- Playing the game will still result in crashes at various points. To fix this you need to get DXWnd http://appaholic.wordpress.com/2007/10/ ... owed-mode/

- This program lets you run other programs while simulating an older version of direct X. In the DXWnd folder set up the BCB.exe file to be run in an older Direct X. I forget which I used to play the game, but I think Direct x 1-6.

You say the Windows version has more video sequences but is it in thousands of colors? Probably not, the requirements specify 256 colors, I'm guessing the LD version has it beaten there.

I just ordered a Macintosh version online, I'm guessing it's the same as Windows.

Edit: The Mac version does indeed support thousands of colors!
