Blade of the great Elements was an unreleased exclusive X68 side scrolling action game originally supposed to be released in 1990 or 1991. I originally discovered it in the June 1990 issue of Oh! X magazine where there is a single page advertisement of the game, but that is pretty much all that was ever revealed and the game disappeared.

Now by complete accident, I came across this thread where the game is discussed. Someone mentions they have the game and eventually uploads a screenshot later in the thread of a beta version of the game dumped and running in an emu.

Now heres the mission, can anyone remotely interested in game preservation and fluent in Japanese figure out if the guy is ever gonna release the dumps, or if he would trade them for something? Being pretty much the only old Japanese computer forum it would be great if we could do what we can continue to properly preserve this stuff. Perhaps other sites like Lost Levels would be interested too?

I can create a scan of the games advertisement from the Oh! X issue. Maybe doing so will result in some respect from the guy that has the dumps and will increase the chances of him distributing it... I don't know how the 2ch politics work.

I look forward to discussion on how to approach the situation

Someone made a blog post about the game here with more screenshots, at around the same time that the guy at 2ch uploaded the screenshot, so I guess its been distributed to a bunch of people now?

From this it can be seen that the game appears to have been an early version of what would eventually become Jewel Master on the Mega Drive. The graphics were all redrawn in Jewel Master though, although it kept many things like the ring system, the first stage being in a forest, and the phoenix boss.

Jewel Master was developed in-house at Sega though. I wonder if they just took the whole team working on Blade of the Great Elements, or if a remaining staff member on the game pitched the design to Sega after the x68 game got canceled for whatever reason.

By brute forcing google and yahoo i've come to the same conclusion that it was passed over through mail to the site reviewer.

Your only option is to actually mail the dude that reviewed/posted the images and ask if he could nicely upload it to something like mediafire (or whatever service has the least of obstacles for a japanese person ^_^).

Yes this approach does actually work from time to time depending on the personality of the other dude ;)

But I would assume the people who supplied it wouldn't mind at this point.

Unless they plan to comercialise it somehow.

Does anyone with good Japanese want to try ask the guy for the disk images?

Towns: Why post a screen of Last Tempest here, I created a seperate thread about it

apachacha: This is just the 'test version' of the game, its far from a finished product.

I was reffering to Towns' post about TLT.

Towns post was about Blade of the Great Elements, not Last Tempest.

And Last Tempest disk images are already available...

Heres some advice: try to read posts a little more carefully before you post stuff.

My bad I was snorting some coke before I posted the image so I didn't notice.

It appears Blade was featured on some kind of "warez" disc:

http://tsuru.tri6.net/sp/pachi/x68ver3.txt "

"<TEST>
BLADE_OF __1 <DIR> 01-10-98 9:54p BLADE OF THE GREAT ELEMENTS"
