I'm sorry micro, I don't understand.
The new versions have 22, 44, and 88 kHz sampling rates under Emulate->Configure.

What is the non-English configuration dialog?

I don't think Policenauts lip-synching will be fixed anytime soon. Policenauts exploits some special behavior of the DOS 5 version of AVS_DRV.SYS for lip synching. The sound becomes really choppy with that version in an emulator. Even on a real machine, lip synching only works with the DOS 5 version of AVS_DRV.SYS.

Correct me if I am wrong.
The original 083 came with several resource files (with localization menu/dialogs?): -
np2_932.dll - Japanese
np2_936.dll - Chinese (PRC)
np2_950.dll - Chinese (Taiwan)
np2_1252.dll - English (United States)

I believe the Emulator uses the appropriate DLL matching Windows regional setting. That maybe the reason I still see the incorrect 11kHz Configuration Dialog in my other system (in which the Neko runs only in Chinese). Delete all those DLLs will force
the Emulator to run in English with your new Config dialog.

Ah, OK. I understand now.

The author of the new fmgen builds didn't include any dll files, so you probably shouldn't use them with the fmgen builds.

But, since the only menu change is the sampling rates, you can still use the non-English menus and just remember that the actual rates are now 22, 44, and 88 kHz.

That's odd - my system is all Japanese, but I always see English menus.

One of my system runs Windows 7, an all English Windows. But, NP2 puts itself in Chinese. The other one runs XP in English as well but it gives English NP2...
It think it is something to do with the code page setting or regional setting whatever!

Latest fmgen build:

Link (pass: 9801): http://www1.axfc.net/uploader/File/so/65104
Sendspace link (no pass): http://www.sendspace.com/file/c17237

This one is a little complicated.

There are two new options in Emulate->Configure

QFM - this option prioritizes FM synth quality, but other audio like BEEPPCM (PC speaker voice samples) will suffer, and there are timing problems at 88 kHz. (I don't know the details)

LPF - low-pass filter, used to eliminate noise at high frequencies. You can just leave it on, but it's not really necessary unless you're also using QFM.

Example options from the readme:
88KHz+LPF+QFM
FM synth is pretty accurate
BEEPPCM is not good
Timing problems
44KHz+LPF+QFM
FM synth is almost as good as at 88 kHz
BEEPPCM is not good
Timing is OK
88KHz+LPF
Some FM synth accuracy issues (but still better than regular np2)
BEEPPCM is pretty good
Timing is OK

The programmer recommends 44kHz+LPF+QFM or 88kHz+LPF.

Basically, disable QFM if you have timing problems or if a game uses beep PCM for voice samples (Tokio, Dennou Tenshi Digital Ange, Paipai Yuugi, etc.). Beep PCM is only an issue for older stuff - most games after 1994 use the onboard PCM functions on the 86 and other sound boards.

This is interesting. Look forward to the perfect FM and beep PCM sync in the next release.

BTW, I realize the confirm exit dialog is broken in this release. No matter I choose yes or no, the emulator will exit eventually.

This has been fixed.

I've got two versions of the BIOS.rom :-

(1) CRC 0A682B93
(2) CRC 315D2703

Does anyone know which is correct? Or both, as from different machines? These two ROMs behave slightly differently to me. For example, while booting up Policenauts Startup Disc, (1) tooks 10 second to load the CD-Rom driver while (2) gets through it quite instantly.

That's normal, they're just from different models.

If you want to test:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/2byqnm

I dumped these myself from real hardware and tested with the CD-ROM driver.

PC-9801UX (1987) - fast
PC-9821Ce2 (1994) - fast
PC-9821V20 (1996) - slow

Thank you for the dumps, kobushi. Maybe we can add these models to the MESS emulator. What I miss are the ITF ROMs.

OK, here you go:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/4k3tcr

Also I should note: the PC-9821V20 uses the Windows Sound System (WSS) and I don't know how to dump its ROM (does it even have one?). The SOUND.ROM in the earlier set is actually from a PC-9801-86 sound board inserted into the V20. A stock V20 would just have BIOS, FONT, and ITF.

Thank you, I appreciate your great contribution. :)
Just for info: WSS doesn't have a ROM, it was just a codec.
