What's the difference between these HDM:

Pebble Beach no Hatou
(DiskExplorer can open OK)

and these HDM:

Eight Lakes G.C.
(DiskExplorer cannot open, error)

Trying to extract the files from them.

Thanks

The first images have a valid FAT12 bootsector. The second set of images does not, looks like there was some kind of custom T&E boot sector.

(If you open the images with FIVEC, the ones with a valid FAT12 boot sector display some information, and the FAT12 tag is added to the right-hand side. That does not occur for the custom boot sector image.)

Amusingly enough, the next sector 0/0/2, did contain a standard FAT table. So I lopped the boot sector off the other disk and stapled it onto the one you can't read.

You should be able to dump this with DiskExplorer ("Plain Image") now, I think:

Thanks, I'll try to reproduce that with the rest of the T&E GOLF disks that can't be opened!

Wish me luck.

And thanks for your FIVEC app.

Interestingly, yesterday I had extracted the contents of the Eight Lakes disk using: https://github.com/barbeque/pc98-disk-tools

I extracted only one big file plus the volume name. I assumed it hadn't worked, but apparently that is the contents! The big file "8.Lakes" is an unknown file format to me, some tools report it to be a TTComp archive but I'm not so sure as the contents are readable.

So close!

Solved!

What I did was install the courses to a Hard Disk image.

And then open that in DiskExplorer and extract the files.

My goal is the extract the 3D course data from the files included with these 6 courses:

COURSE01-AUGUSTA (Masters)
COURSE02-8LAKES (Eight Lakes G.C. = fictional)
COURSE03-TESEL (T&E Selection = fictional)
COURSE04-WAIALAE (Waialae Country Club)
COURSE05-PEBBLE (Pebble Beach Golf Links)
COURSE06-DEVIL (Devil's Course/Wicked 18 = fictional)
