Well... now that the common stuff is out of the way, I suppose it's on to the more obscure things.

DIP files have a 256 byte header, then the C/H/S data. The actual "header" part of the header appears to be only 16 bytes, followed by a comment string. The problem is, I have no idea what the first 16 bytes mean:

01 08 00 13 41 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00

All the DIP files I have are exactly 1,261,824 bytes, and appear to have the following configuration:

2HD-8 sector (1.25MB) (BKDSK .HDM) (aka 2HS)
2 sides, 77 tracks, 8 sectors/track, 1024 bytes/sector = 1,261,568 bytes, which comes to exactly the DIP file size once you slap on the 256 byte header.

However, since they're all identical, I have no way of knowing if the 16 bytes at the beginning have any meaning. Anyone have a DIP file that is a different size?

(https://melog.info/archives/2004/09/30223144.html mentions DIP, but doesn't have any details or appears to know where it's from.)

I checked over 100 files. In all of them the first 16 bytes are as you say, as are the file sizes.

Interestingly, the comment often but not always ends on a CR/LF 0D 0A string.
