I've been porting the TLWiki translation of Yu-No to the PC-98 version for the past few months, thanks to tomyun's great reverse-engineering skills and tools.

I haven't pushed it to RHDN, since the Goemon debacle I think it's better to be extra careful with games with sensitive content such as this one... but it is avaliable on the Internet Archive.

Here it the 1.0 patch, featuring lots of typo corrections by shiningforceforever :

Kudos for an excellent initiative. And obviously I won't have to convert my music pack for this version :P

Checking the patch, it seems all good.

Unfortunately, the intro remained untranslated? I remember providing the required files to the original translation team (the credits use a simple palette animation). There was also a typo on the company screen ("All rights reserred") which I had corrected as well.

Windows version:

Not sure if the file format of the PC-98 version is the same, but if you want to look into it, here are the modified graphic files.

The format is indeed different, the PC-98 image uses a lower color depth (4-bit VS 8-bit for the Windows port).

I can insert these files in the PC-98 version, but I'm afraid the result will not be too good. If you can provide me some 4-bit versions, that would be ideal !

I spoke too soon. The files don't lose any information while being converted to GP4. And as a matter of fact, they look great !

You can drop them into the "YUNO" directory of the patched .HDI ; I'll add them to the next revision.

Thanks for providing these !

I inserted the GP4 files in the game install, but unfortunately the names are not correctly displayed. The text is supposed to fade out from colour to black, but the letters are black with white artefacts around them.

I suspect the palette index may have been reordered during the conversion from BMP/GP8 to GP4 (if we assume the palette is the same between the PC-98 and Windows files). Strictly speaking, it doesn't matter that the Windows files are 8-bit. The actual palette is limited to 16 colours. But for the palette animation to work, the number and order of the colours have to remain unchanged.

Which tools do you use to convert picture formats for PC-98? I tried to reduce my BMP files to 4-bit, but the palette is automatically rearranged in the process, which is annoying.

It's a specific tool made by tomyun from the PC-98 discord. It only works with 4-bit BMPs without compression. I'll send you the link and instructions in PM if you want to take a look.

Here are the corrected versions, with the color fade working. As you suspected, it was a problem with the palettes being rearranged while converting to 4-bit. I had to edit them manually to keep the same order while reducing to 16 colors.

Thanks for the conversion tool. The new files are working properly 8)

[Edit]

From your patch notes, I see a few other Windows translated pictures have been imported into the PC-98 version. I don't remember if those pictures are colour-animated. Is there any risk that their palette might have been rearranged too? It would be nice to check them, just in case...

For these few CGs, tomyun did the conversion just after finishing the GP4 tool. They have been tested ingame and work without any problem. You can check them directly in CG mode ; they're the two news report involving Kaori, the parallel world theory you can read at the beginning of the game, and the signs of the protestants during the event at Geo Technics during Ayumi's route.

This translation backport is a great way to start the year :D

I just noticed a small typo at the beginning of the prologue, after talking to Eriko -- a missing space in "be spectacularly".

Drat... my tester and I went through 2 playthroughs to get rid of these, but it seems there are still some errors left... Don't hesitate to drop me a message if you find more, I'll fix them for the next release ^^

In GIMP, I was able to keep the original GP4 palette by first converting image to RGB mode (Image - Mode - RGB), making some edits, and finally converting it back to indexed color (Image - Mode - Indexed..) then choose an existing palette from the original image. Note that the original image should be already loaded in another window/tab to make its palette available.
