There seem to be some translations made by some user named roguelike.

On his yt channel he posted some trailers for the following games:

Dead of the Brain
Dragon Knight 1
Horny Sweeper 2
Makyouden
Night Slave
Sword of Kumdor
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuMhG--kXhCKJANO0slAjJg

The download link refers to his patreon page which seems to be down. All the vids were uploaded last year.

From the games above I could got my hands only on Dead of the Brain, which was a nice translation.

Do anyone know if the others were really completed and released? Maybe someone could share anything?

Looks like there's a download/torrent over at the PC98 subreddit:

https://www.reddit.com/r/pc98/comments/jnt90h/retronomicon_game_translations/

I'd host the games myself, but I need the translator's permission for that, and I haven't seen any way to contact them.

I think all his translations were payware (and for some reason have been taken down).

Out of caution, I will not allow distribution of his patches on the forum.

I remember reading that they are also rather bad translations, so I wouldn't bother anyway.

I haven't actually loaded them up, but reading the documentation, it looks like you have to use an external font, as the actual text data has been edited into something that's not really Shift-JIS. Meaning anyone running them with just the disk image or on original hardware isn't going to see anything but gibberish:

This translation uses a font hack to modify the BIOS font. It's in ANEX86.BMP if you can figure out how to get that into whatever you're using.

It's true. The Horny Sweeper 2 translation for example has tons of bullshit completely made up by the author instead of staying true to the plot.

Horny Sweeper 2 had a plot?

Little disappointing, though. I truly wonder what the story to Sword of Kumdor could possibly be.

The donations were voluntary, if I remember correctly. But of course, by paying people were expecting something of a high quality. And this was his downfall - there was a shitstorm and he decided to permanently close the blog.

You're right - "plot" may be not the exactly right term. But anyway I remember reading his own words when I was a regular there that most of the English text was simply made up by him, because the original was too stupid to translate or something like this...

...and this is why I didn't bother even trying to patch any of those games, so unfortunately I can't answer that. Like gradius3 said, Dead of the Brain was probably his best work and most faithful to the Japanese original - there was even a longplay of it on YT. About the rest, I can only confirm that those were indeed completed and released.

Dragon Knight had some context errors ("washi" translated as "the eagle" instead of "I" for instance) and probably some made-up stuff. Night Slave seemed to make sense, but again, I don't have the language skills to compare...

The plot doesn't really matter in both these games anyway (even if Night Slave is surprisingly dark). As for Horny Sweeper, I think it's actually an improvement to make fun of the script as it's just some poor excuse for hentai... To be honest I only played the first game and it was awful. Boring, repetitive, totally unchallenging. There are many, many better T-RPGs on PC-98, including H ones.

So I guess it doesn't really hurt. Translating a story-driven RPG or VN this way would have been way worse.

I played through Dead of the Brain some time ago and it was very fun. Although I can't say anything about the quality of the translation as I don't speak japanese I have to conclude that it seemed like a fitting translations as it all made sense and seemed fine. I am so glad that this cool game was translated.

So for the others, which I grabbed and just shortly tested, I think that anything translated is better than nothing. It sure is debatable if those deviations from the original script is acceptable or not as well as some rather "bad" machine translations. I understand that a lot of people don't like that approach. And true, it would have been better communicated in advance so everyone would have known what to expect.

But nonetheless I am happy that some more games got translations. That's just my opinion. Really looking forward to play Makyouden now.
