I'm planning to finally order a PC98, but I want to make sure I get the best model for my use. Basically, most of my collection consists of C'sWare visual novels, as well as Nightslave and some other games like Flashback. What would be my safest bet to make sure I can run these games without issues?

The one I am currently looking at PC-9821 Cb 10, which seems to be a rather good all around model?

That is a CanBe model, of which I have one myself. They have compatibility issues with quite a few games, especially older ones, though I am not sure about the specific ones you are interested in.

The best models for compatibility are Ce2, and another one whose name i forget. Ideally married with one of those super rare CPU accelerators.

The best models are the PC-9821A (especially the AP/AP2 and AS/AS2) and PC-9821C models. These "A" and "C" series have FM sound built-in to the mainboard.Any of the other models will require the external PC-9801-86 FM sound board which can give some compatibiliy issue on some software.

P.S.
The 'C' models has the YMF288 OPNA (and not the YM2608) which is an "86 compatible" chip, I've heard it can give problems on some games.

I have a PC-9821V12, and never had any issue, or incompatibility until now.
Plus, it is very easy machine to start, as it is quite similar to a normal PC.
You can see some of my tutorials to install games or hardware here :

good luck to find a good machine !
