The PC98 variants that come with built in 6 channel FM sound have one major flaw, they lack a joypad port on the machine. Anyone know of a workaround to this?

Playing games using a keyboard is an awkward torture that I can do without.

the PC-98 joypad has 2 type of connector

type1:
PC-9801-26/26K or PC-9801-86 's DB9 port

it's define as ATARI type joystick standard
this is used by DOS games.

type2:
PC-9801-118 / SoundBlaster 16/98 or SoundBlaster AWE32/98 or EPSON PC-486M Series ==> db15 port

it's define as MidiPort compatable joystick ,
it used under Windows environment.

Yeah, I had to buy a PC-9801-86 to get a port on my machine. Seems there is a solution using the mouse port that works for certain models.

What about the PC-88, do any models come with DB-9 Atari ports out of the box?

not only atariport in PC-9801-86, there also 'many' PC-9801-26K's clone board can support this

so your question is how to add the atariport or atariport 's pin define?

PC-88 seems can't support joystick or gamepad

maybe other 3rd makers presented some hardware on this ,

bad english, sorry _(:з)∠)_

After a bit more research it turns out that you can just connect a Japanese PC joycard to a PC-88 mouse port and it will work in games that support it.
