Hi!

Recently I got a Sony PVM 9L2. It's a cute professional 9" CRT, very small and easy to move thanks to its handle. I have it on my desk sitting on the side of my 32" 4K LCD :D

I also have an extension card that adds VGA/SCART inputs, so I'm using it with a mini PC running Batocera connected by a simple VGA cable.

This CRT only support 15khz unfortunately, so 240p / 480i.

Though, I've tried emulating the PC98 on it and I think it looks really good! Especially the artworks.

At 480i60, the image is very unstable so it's not playable. But it is also possible to render only half of the images - 30 instead of 60 - still at 480i60, and then I think it becomes quite stable and playable!

Unfortunately the TV lines on this CRT are only 250, so the text is hard to read.

I think the original PC98 was 24khz? Question: Were all the early PC98 displaying 400p60? Or some of them just 400i60?

Of course, I got this CRT mostly for 240p60 content - and that looks amazing!

Even 480i60 from the PS2/GC/XB/DC looks pretty good. Heck, even watching old 4:3 videos on this thing is awesome :D

Just wanted to share my experience! Though beware that the prices on this series (L) is getting crazy. Got mine for around 250 euros including shipping.

I'm not 100% certain but I think the PC-9800 line was compatible with 15 KHz in 640x200 (aka. PC-88 mode).
640x400 requires a 24 KHz monitor. Maybe a multisync display (CRT or LCD) could do the trick.

Indeed. It seems that some games are designed for 640x200 such as Dragon Knight - the pixels are doubled vertically.

I did it again, got a 14" Sony PVM a few days ago :D

This one is much better, 600 TV lines so the clarity is much improved - though still limited to 15khz.

I've tried to run Dragon Knight at 640x200p60, and it looks perfect!

That's the equivalent to 640x400 but with scanlines - which is not a problem for this game, and with a progressive - 100% stable image.

There is a 640x200 screenmode, but I haven't seen any reference yet to that it's also supposed to output at 15 khz and not just pixel-doubled and be stuck at 24 Khz on the hardware.
The refresh rate is also around 56 Hz not the common 60Hz (though maybe it can change, like on x68000?). Then again, that is also supposed to be the case for the PC-88 line, and the later models have composite out and the emulators refer to 15 Khz. I wouldn't be surprised that for a platform as dominant as the PC-98 there was at least some TV-Out accessory.
