Some recent, though minor progress
The intro has had Engrish removed and the character names translated. The original options at the introduction have also been translated.

Great! So have you solved that compression problem you told me? _________________ Call me Snake... |

| Well, I'm pretty sure I'm not seeing all of the in-game text in my hex editor at the moment. There seem to be two hiragana encodings used in the game. Although what is a big problem is the fact that second hiragana encoding has the same hex values as the latin letters, so I hope there is a second set of latin characters within the game or I won't be able to translate everything. I don't think the game uses any compression, and I don't ever remember telling anyone I had a compression problem. |

When your saying it uses the same latin characters, are you talking about it using 1 byte for the kana? Most times they seem to convert it to SJIS at the end so it may be possible to use the same set (I've looked at couple for the PC88 and this seems common, mostly been looking at the X68000 though), you'd just need to find the values (which can be a pain if you don't have the dissassembly in front of you).
Also if it'll help, I have a debugger version of M88 (2.19 though, but I'll update it to the 2.21 since the code has been posted) compiled that enables the CPU logging feature, it seems to work pretty well except it crashes when you stop logging it (need to fix it) if you want it. |

I haven't looked much at the code (and I'm not intending to ), but it seems that all hiragana is enclosed by two 7Ch characters.
Haven't checked for katakana, but I can see some 7Ds and 7Es in the text.
Between the escape characters the table looks like this:
あ = 31h, い = 32h, ..., ろ = 5Bh.
を is 26h apparently, while small ゃ ゅ ょ are 2Ch-2Eh.
5Fh is new line character, 5Eh is for ゙, and so on...
If you need it you should be able to complete the table by examining some text.
In any case all ASCII appears as it is, so you'll probably only have to remove those 7xh characters (which gives you some extra space for translation ).
Test:

I actually figured that out just before you posted, Ashura. Thanks anyway.
And EsperKnight, that debug version of m88 will be quite useful. Please upload it.
Edit:
Town menus have been finished!
Next up, battle menu and monster names.

Seems that translation project is going pretty well. I wish you best luck with it, just can't wait it to be ready.

I might too be interested about debug version of M88 for my own forever projects. So please upload it when you get it fixed. |

It's been a little while since I've uploaded screenshots showing progress, so here's various bits of the game that have been translated.

Most of the conversation text, the text within the different places in Beast City, various pieces of text within BIAS. The only thing that has me worried is the conversation system at this moment; my translator is having trouble with some lines due to lack of context. A more pressing problem is that I can't change the length of the text that can be input. For example, you can ask any of the other Screamers about the different monsters, like トーチワーム(Torch Worm). But since I only have 6 characters, I can only fit "TorchW" It's going to be more of a problem for the few pieces of text where the translation is shorter than the room I have, which I don't have a solution for. |
